2012 Tokyo Auto Salon - Auto Shows

There are two car shows of note in Tokyo: the Tokyo Auto Show and the Tokyo Auto Salon. They are very different, as one highlights the newest cars and concepts that will grace the roads all over the world, while the other features products and lifestyle elements that may—or in some cases should not—grace those same roads. Without further ado, we present a selection of “bests” and “worsts” for your enjoyment, comment and possible ridicule.
 Volk Racing TE37C1

Although these wheels are just a concept, we were amazed to see a 19x8½ wheel that weighs just 7 kilograms, or 15.4 pounds. That’s a weight normally reserved for a 15-in. wheel!

BBS RI-D 001
BBS brought out a svelte wheel too, with its RI-D 001 weighing in at just 16.3 pounds for a 19x9 size.

Suzuki Palette SW

The SW stands for Super Wagon, and this little box of a car has fold-flat seat system and electrically operated sliding rear doors. It’s a pint-sized minivan that doesn’t sacrifice much in the way of utility. There’s even a version that’s all-wheel-drive and turbocharged!

Honda CR-Z Tuning Parts

The CR-Z isn’t a bad car, but it’s not the sports compact that we hoped it would be. No doubt the tuners in Japan thought so too, so they came to the Auto Salon in force with hop-up parts. HKS displayed a supercharger kit, while Mugen brought out a pair of modified CR-Z RR Concepts. The cars featured a well integrated body kit and upgraded wheel/tire package. The gasoline engine was modified with a supercharger too, upping its output to 177 bhp.

Touch-B.R.A.I.N.

Speaking of hybrid tuning, Blitz showed off its Touch-B.R.A.I.N. (which stands for Blitz Reflash and Advanced Information Network) system designed for use on hybrid vehicle applications. Details are scarce, but the system appears to give you the raw numbers on how your hybrid powertrain is functioning. There are also provisions for throttle pedal remapping and the ability to reflash the onboard engine management system as well.

Subaru BRZ/Scion FR-S Tuning Parts

The cars aren’t even out yet, and already the aftermarket is ready! Tuning house Prova’s BRZ looked the best in our eyes, with its high mount wing and aggressive rear diffuser.

And now for the aspects of the Salon that we would’ve rather not seen.

Like this excessively turbocharged Nissan R32 GT-R.

Or this Ferrari 430 with Lamborghini envy.

A heart-shaped alloy steering wheel, anyone?

What about this “hellaflush” minivan?

We’re not quite sure where a slammed Hummer H1 would be useful. Ducking under low bridges and tree limbs, perhaps?

And finally, here’s a new take on the conversion van. It’s a conversion Prius!
